Each morning will start at 7:30 a.m. with dawn prayers at the sacred spot and a story by one of the staff members about what the Baha'i Faith means to him/her... or about someone that they admire for their service to humanity.
At 8 a.m., breakfast is served.
At 9 a.m., we will have an opening of the day program with music, prayers, stories, games, and an acknowledgement of the spiritual virtues we see in each other. This program is prepared by a different group of students each day. Sometimes students play a few musical pieces on their instruments during this part of the program.
From 10:00 until noon, the students will be in academic classes. During this time, they will be grouped by grade level. The curriculum is based on moral leadership capabilities. See next page, curriculum, for details.
During lunch and recess, the students have several options. They can play on the volleyball court, play football or soccer, or do something indoors. They can practice their musical instruments, shower, read, write in a journal, or simply hang out and talk with their friends.
At 2:00 there will be a workshop. The students will be introduced to the topic by a few staff members, and then they will work together in small groups to deepen their understanding of the concepts. Often they role play or create something to share with the community.
At 3:00, we have rotational arts so that students can explore different artistic expressions. The students are placed in small groups, and the group participates in a different program each day. One of the days they will do a service project for the Catholic Conference and Formation Center, another day they will learn a step dance, another day they will do a craft... depending on the talents of the staff members.
At 4:00, we group according to our interest in gala arts - step dance, drama, choir, visual arts, or sometimes hip hop dance.
From 5:00 to 6:30 is a break for dinner and recess.
At 6:30, the students attend Assembly meetings. These groups of about 6 students each, have students of all ages participate together. They consult on a wide variety of topics. Sometimes Assemblies will make a recommendation on ways to improve the program, and those items are shared at the opening of the day the next morning. Some of the time is spent learning about how consultation is explained in the Baha'i Writings.
At 7:45 there is usually a very active, fun, uplifting evening program. Sometimes we play organized games outside, and other times we will be in the main hall for a program.
At 9:15, we enjoy a light refreshment together.
About 9:30 we quietly and reverently enter the main room for our Close of the Day program. We take account of ourselves privately, and share music and prayers together. About 10:00, we walk quietly back to our casas (dorms) to get ready for bed. The students in the casas have a chance to consult about housekeeping matters, and then go to their rooms to rest.
The most essential element of the program, "Change for Tomorrow," is that we are experiencing the joy of living in a loving spiritual community. We encourage all students to actively participate, to share their thoughts, dreams, ideas, and concerns. Students have ample opportunity to ask questions about faith, religion, junior youth groups, and opportunities for service. They grow very close to the young men and women who serve as their mentors on the staff.
Students are encouraged to return each summer from the age of twelve to fifteen. The curriculum is designed students to come three times, but even if they come only once, they will benefit. The students build close bonds of love and friendship with each other, and their sharing and learning continue during the year as they communicate with one another via facebook, e-mail, cell phone calls, junior youth group meetings, and other events.
